Unauthorized Transactions Right After Activation
I bought this gift card for my elderly aunt. She is my uncle's widow and he passed away last year, and this was her 2nd anniversary without him so I bought her the Vanilla Visa gift card so she could buy something for herself. I've bought these online before to be shipped directly to her and two other aunts in Maine and previously I did not have any issues. This time was different. The gift card arrived in the mail on a Thursday, so she went online that evening to activate it. Then overnight, while she was asleep, 3 transactions to some kind of online casino tool all but $0.03 from the card, which she found out when she was in the store and it wouldn't work, showing it only had a $0.03 balance. I thought that by buying these online and having it shipped directly to my elderly aunts in Maine, that we wouldn't run the risk of something like this happening. She has disputed it, but it will take 45-90 days to see if she will be given the money back, but this is no guarantee. Unfortunately, this will be the last time we buy one of these. I am helping her and my other aunts to sign up for one of the well-known instant money transfer options tomorrow, so when we try to send them something, we can avoid this.
